Algebra Definitions: Part 6

Here is Math Made Easy's 6th instalment  of Algebra Terms.......

Need help with algebra? You are not alone! Algebra is one of the
most difficult subjects for many students, even those who are normally
high achievers. But here's some good news: once a student becomes
familiar with the special "language" of algebra, it can become one of
the easiest, and even most enjoyable, things for them to do!

Algebra is based on a special kind of logic--once it clicks in
students' heads, it becomes easy to apply to any type of problem. The
trouble is, some students learn best at different paces, and in
different environments, than others. For many, a 45-minute classroom
session, surrounded by the distractions of their peers, is simply not
the ideal way to learn.

Even if students pay close attention in class, they are liable to
miss a lesson or a portion of a lesson for any number of reasons. And
since math works like a chain, with one concept leading to the next, a
"missed link" causes subsequent material to stop making sense. With
Math Made Easy's innovative program of DVDs, students no longer feel
embarrassed when they need to have a concept repeated to them. They
simply rewind the disc to hear the information explained again!

legs of a right triangle: The sides that form the right angle.

line segment: The part of a line that consists of two points and all points between them. Also called segment.

linear equation:A polynomial equation of degree one.

linear equation in two variables:  Any equation equivalent to one of the form ax + by = c, where a, b, and c are real numbers with a and b not both zero. Its graph is a line.

linear function: A function defined by f(x) = mx + b.

linear programming:  A branch of mathematics concerned with problems that involve maximizing or minimizing a quantity.

linear term:  A term of degree one.

maximum point of a parabola: The highest point; the point whose y-coordinate is the greatest value of the corresponding function.

mean: The sum of the data in a collection divided by the number of items.

mean proportional: When the means of a proportion are equal, each mean is called the mean proportional between the two extremes.

means: In the proportion a : b = c : d, b and c are the means.

median:  In a frequency distribution, the middle numbers or the average of the two middle numbers when the data are arranged in order.

minimum point of a parabola:  The lowest point; the point whose y-coordinate is the least value of the corresponding function.

mixed expression:  The sum or difference of a polynomial and a fraction.

mixed number:  The sum of an integer and a fraction.

mode: The most frequently occurring number in a frequency distribution.

monomial:  An expression that is either a numeral, a variable, or the product of a numeral and one or more variables.

multiple:  The product of any real number and an integer is a multiple of the real number.

multiple root:  A solution of an equation that occurs more than once.

natural order of integers:  Order from least to greatest.

negative integers:  The numbers 1,-2,-3,-4, and so on.

negative number:  A number paired with a point on the negative side of a number line.

negative side:  On a horizontal number line, the side to the left of the origin.

nonterminating decimal: When a common fraction is written as a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator, the result is a nonterminating decimal if a digit or block of digits repeats endlessly as the remainder. Also called unending, infinite, repeating, or periodic decimal.

null set:  The set with no members; the empty set.

numeral:  An expression that names a particular number; a numerical expression.

numerical expression:  An expression that names a particular number; a numeral.

obtuse angle: An angle with measure between 90 degrees and 180 degrees.

odd integer:  An integer that is not even
